Topic: From Cigarettes to Pouches: Understanding the Evolving Threat to Youth Health

This session will explore youth nicotine use, including vaping, smoking, and nicotine pouches, with an emphasis on health risks and developmental impacts.  We will review current data and trends – nationally and in Tennessee with a focus on adolescents.  The presentation will address state and school policies along with advocacy strategies to equip pediatricians with practical guidance for prevention, counseling, and policy engagement.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify and compare the various products and methods through which adolescents are exposed to nicotine
  2. Explain the health risks associated with nicotine use in adolescents.
  3. Analyze the current national and Tennessee-specific data on youth nicotine use trends
  4. Discuss state and school policies related to nicotine use
  5. Evaluate strategies for effective change and advocacy surrounding nicotine use in our adolescent patient population
